Storyboard of Documentary including Tescos

Below is a still capture of a storyboard Amir and i sketched on to a white board so we could visualise our documentary and were able to edit and change our ideas. This storyboard includes all of our sequences that we have filmed as well as transitions.

whilst writing up this story board we we discussing ways in Which we could make our documentary flow better using different transition. We also discussed Music as an option which will make the documentary seem more relaxed. Amir and myself we both thinking of using a type of music which can represent Levi Roots and his Jamaican background we then thought about Bob Marley and have the song We Jammin to add a relaxing melody to the background.

Tescos permission

For part of our documentary Amir and i wanted to video Levi's Produce at the supermarket where we can mention his sales. We had many shots in mind to produce this part of the sequence. Amir contacted the head of security at Tescos in Brooklands and was able to get permission to film on Tuesday 7th November at 9pm. This permission was verbally exchanged.

Clapham Junction

On tuesday 9th of November Amir and I took a train to Clapham Junction to visit Levi Roots at his restaurant. We got a train from Weybridge station to clapham and then had a 10 minute walk from the station to Levi's restaurant.

Fortunatley we arrived early for the interview giving us plenty of time to set up our equipment. We were able to access 2 cameras from the school and three tri-pods as amir was able to provide a third camera from home giving us three different angels to shoot from to make the interview more professional. We were also granted use of the yeti from the school to use for our interview so you were able to hear the whole discussion and so the sound was alot clearer. Amir and myself both bought along our laptop so that we could plug in the yeti and have one as back-up. We also took along a camera to capture still shots of the area.

Once Levi had arrived, all of our equipment was ready to go except for the yeti. Amir and Myself had used the yeti before during lessons when we were creating our archive footage with voiceovers but were unable to get the yeti to work for this interview. At this stage we weren't what to do as we didnt think the microphones in the cameras would be strong enough to pick up the sound luckliy with amir's camera there was a jack where a microphone can be pluged in and we had a little clip on microphone to use as back up. Once the other microphone was plugged in we were then able to proceed with the interview.

We asked Levi a variety of questions, below is a print screen of the questions. We Have also decided to film outside Levi's restaurant with and opening paragraph below is a copy of the paragraph.

Once we had finished the interview we took a few still photos around the restaurant and outside with levi. Below are some of the photos we had taken but unfortunatley when transferring the photos over to the laptops some of the file had corrupted and we lost a few of our photos.

Presenting Our Idea

Archive Editing footage

Not only do we want to interview Levi Roots for out documentary we also want to add some archive footage of his begining. Myself and Amir found some archive footage of Levi's auditiong on dragons den and spent the time after school to edit this footage adding in some voices over.

We edited the video where Levi sings his theme tune for the sauce in which we had it fade out after a few second in the footage after the music stops we added a few voice overs thoughout the sequence which tell the audeince short facts about Levi Roots and his first audtion. We tryed to time each voice over so that it matches what is happening in the clip.

Amir and I wrote a script for this archive footage which we used for the voice overs, we tryed to make the script sounds as professional as possible. The script was as followed

(Starts with Levi Roots' entrace to dragons den. He walks up that stairs singing and the music fades out after 12 seconds)

Singing his way to success, Levi Roots first appeared on The BBC television show Dragons Den in 2006.

His pitch was to raise a £50,000 investment for a %20 share in his product, Reggae Reggae Sauce, which was made from a secret recipe, passed down from his grand mother.

Two of the Dragons, Peter Jones and Richard Farleigh were both enticed by Levi's Pitch

After receiving the investment that Levi was looking for, his life changed dramatically, and we want to know, just how far Levi's career has progressed

(fades to black titles roll)

Here are some photos of Amir and myself editing our footage as evidence of our research, editing and planning.

Here is the Archive footage Amir and I have editied including the voiceover. we will use this sequences as the opening to our documentary.

Prezi

Amir and I thought that we should make a prezi to show some of fascinating information about Levi. Our media teacher informaed us of the website and said that it would bee a good idea, the only problem was, was that neither of us had created a prezi before. we created one together after school one day below are some screen shots that we took to use as evidence of our planning and research.

Below is our first attempt of a prezi:

Levi Roots

After some long hard thinking, we decided on doing none of the options we had discussed as another even better idea came to us. Levi roots. Many know Levi Roots from the television programme Drangons Den, whcih is where Levi First started. The Idea Levi Roots came to us when Amir was telling me about the storys of which celebrity he had met and Levi Roots came into it. We both thought immediately, Levi Roots Making of Mogal. Luckly For us Amir's Mother Knows Levi's PR and was able to call on our behalf and ask if he would be interested in answering a few questions for us so we can look into rise to fame Levi Experianced. Fortunatley Levi Agreed to do an interview. No date has been set yet but it will be during the October month which is perfect us, giving us time to plan our questions and shots and draw up a few storyboards to set it all out.

Amir has previously met Levi Roots at a gathering he went to with his Parents. We both believe that this documentary will be an indepth look into the life of Levi Roots.

Below is a clip from the episode in which Levi Roots appeared on Dragens Den

Documentary Ideas

Whilst in class Amir and I had the chance to discuss ideas for our documentary, in which we are to create and film as our final media project. We came up with all sorts of ideas but no of them stood out to either of us as we wanted to do something that would really test our media skills and ability. Here were a few of our ideas that we both discussed in class:

• A mockmentary based on short task people take part in order to gain a laugh. We got the idea from the TV show called Balls of Steel, but this idea will not be like a programme but more about documenting this funny events.

• A documentary showing to what extent the media influences our body images. we choose this as an idea as it has become increasingly popular in the news over the past couple of years and thought that we would be able to research the subject very deeply and find what has happened and what is being done about the issue.

• Recent topics, such as Swine flu, recent wars. These topics would appeal to most audiences as they are what have been apearing in the news recently but have the oppurtunity to be researched into more detail.

Documentary Project

For our media Project we have been asked to get into groups and create a small documentary lasting no longer than 5 minutes. The documentary can be based on anything we choose so in our groups we have to decide the topic, arrange the dates, film to docuemntary and edit it. It is a little simmular to our project we had in AS, but we have a little more freedom as to what we can do. I am Working with Amir choudhury who i worked with when creating our thriller project. I think that Amir and myself Will work well together as we both have the same amount of experiance seen as niether of us took media GCSE but both took it AS level this gives us the chance to both grow and adapt our media skills.

Documentaries over summer

Over summer i watched a variety of documentaries, ranging from tragic events to people's adventures. the most recent documentary i watched was 9/11 I was there. It was a documentary i found on sky's anytime service and was created for the audiences to meet the people caught up in the terror attacks of 9/11. This documentary contains a poetic yet expository style as it shows the real emotions and feelings of the unfortunate victims of the attacks as well as exposes the real information as to what actually happened. Unfortunately i was unable to find any clips available to post on my blog but found some images as shown below of a photographer who starred in the documentary named David Handschuh that was photographing the unfortunate event.

Another Documentary that i had watched over summer was one about the world's tiniest girl named Charlotte. It was a documentary aired on channel five and followed the lives of Charlotte and her family and how they have coped with Charlotte's rare condition whihc will enable her to grow no taller than 2ft. Charlotte is the youngest out of 4 children aged 2 and has a rare form of primordial dwarfism. The documentary is an observational documentary that follows the family and exposes their issues. The documentary overall gives off an emotional effect and makes the audience feel the emotions that the family has felt all through the sppech and interviews with the parents.

Below is the trailer for the documentary aired on channel five:

Louis Theroux's Wierd Weekends

Louis Theroux has made a vast amount of documentarys under the name of Louis Theroux Weird Weekends which aired on BBC2. These documentarys were different each week with a camera following Louis and the different types of people that he exposed to the camera. the most recent one which we viewd in class recently was Louis Theroux Weird Weekends at a Brothel. this documenatry was an expository docmentary reveling the lives of females living in a brothel created by a previous prostitutue and shows the audience the type of atmosphere displayed in a brothel.
During the documentary there are many informal interviews with some of the clients who have visited the brothel. They explain to Louis why they visit this place as well as how normal it feels to their nature. Whilst watching the Documentary you couold see that some of the females living there could feel uncomfortable during some of there experiances as they are chosen specifically by the clients and can be treated in ways in whihc they would never experiance out of the brothel.
The documentary is a very realistic documnetary showing the real lives of female escourts in a legal brothel as reveals thier real thoughts and views on how living in a brothel has changed their lives either way.

Here is a power point containing information on the programme MTV and the types of shows they provide to the public as well information on a couple of documentarys aired on the channel

Louis Theroux

Louis Theroux is a British-American broadcaster who is best known for his Gonzo Style Journalism. Gonzo journalism is a style of journalism written subjectively, it often includes the writer as part of the story. The style often uses personal experiences and emotions to provide context for the story or event being covered in the documentary. The gonzo style journalism looks past the product favoured by the newspapers and the media and looks for the more gritty real factor, common aspects would be Sarcasm, humour, quotes and exaggeration. During his early career he worked as a correspondent for Micheal Moore TV Nation series another famous film maker. once this job ended he was then singed by the BBC where Louis landed a job as the film maker of Louis Theroux's weird weekends. He used many forms in order to show his documentaries from, observation, to poetic and reflexive.

Louis Theroux's Weird Weekends was Louis first real job documenting on subcultures. He followed mostly American Subcultures such as Black Nationalists, Porn Stars and Survivalists and then documented on their beliefs. In order for Louis to access this information he lived amongst or close to the people involved in this subcultures and observed their way of living. There were Three Series to Louis Theroux's Weird Weekends each showing episodes on different subcultures Which people would not normally come into contact with or experience up close.
below is a short clip of Louis theroux during one of his documnetaries based around female body builders:

Nick Broomfield

Nick Broomfield is an English documentary film maker who studied film at the National Film School. his type of documentaries vary as some are poetic and tell a story, which also involve Nick Broomfield himself in a reflexive way, where he stars in the film, some of his documentaries are also observational and follow the event throughout its journey. It was not until the release of Driving me Crazy (1988) that Nick appeared on the screen for the first time, it is for this reflexive film style that Nick Broomfield is best known for. In 2006 Nick Broomfield then changed his style to what he calls "Direct Cinema", using non actors play themselves. Broomfields Style of filming is very simple only involving him and 1-2 camera operators.
His first film he created was called Who cares (1971). He shot this film whilst at university using a wind up Bolex Camera and shooting it on short ends. After this he then went on to create some very well known documentaries. Nick Broomfields best known work would probably be Kurt and Courtney.

Kurt and Courtney is a documentary film about Kurt Cobain and Courtney love. It is a inside view to the death of Kurt Cobain and the involvement of Courtney Love. It is Nick Broomfields most well known work maybe due to the information about two of the biggest known celebrities. The film Concludes that there is not enough evidence to support that Cobain was Murdered. This type of Documentary is of poetic form telling a in depth story. the documentary was directed, written, produced and narrated all by Nick Broomfield.

Nick Broomfield has a website in whihc he shares all of his information about up and coming films as well as backround information about his life and interest:

Research- What is a documentary

A documentary is a way in which people document on events or people. There purpose is to record these events or people and reveal the information by presenting it to the camera. Documentaries are there to persuade or promote information to the public, to do this they analyse and interrogate people, events which they believe would be of interest to the public. In documentary views and opinions are able to be expressed throughout in order to show a balanced situation.

There are different forms and types of Documentary that are published, these forms give an insight into the the documentary genre is structured, these include:

reflexive- the filmmaker acknowledges their presence in the documentary and in front of the camera producing and giving a narrative guide throughout the documentary

poetic- an artistic way in showing the documentary, for example documentary about human affairs could be shown through real life experience.

Observational- this is when a documentary follows the event or the person through its journey as it is occurring.

Expository- when a documentary exposes information, flaws about a situation, for example Michael Moore did a documentary about the political system and exposed the flaws to the system to the public through the documentary.

Below is a short clip i found that explains the three most common styles of documnetaries in more detail:

There are many documnetarist who are well known for exposing the inside to abnormality in events and humans, these include:
Micheal Moore
Nick Brromfield
Louis Theroux
