Documentary Evaluation

Simular to last year, we had to create a power point presentation for our documentary evaluation but only with four questions, the question in which i had to answer were as followed.

  • In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

  • How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary pieces?

  • What have you learned from your audience feedback?

  • How did you use your media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stage?

Below is a copy of my power point presentation of my evaluation.

Documentary Editing

After discussing our improvements, amir and i got to work editing our final product again in order to improve.

our fist task was to edit the opening. the original opening was very simple with just levi introducing himself on dragons den singing. we had seen a documentary on the BBC whihc had influenced us to change the begining to something more inteeting and up beat, by having archive images display on the screen intime with the beat. we had decided to add more archive images to the opening, which we had collected using the internet. we used images of articles on levi roots, images which we had taken on location and images which we had edited. below are a few of these pictures:

We has used simular images to break up our interview section, this was so the audiance do not get bored.

Below is a clip of the inspirational opening:

Here is a clip of our version, which we have used in our opening:

Documentary improvements

After our first edit of our documentary we had shown it to our teacher, who helped us agree on some improvements which we need to make in order to make our documentary seem more like a documentary. these improvements included:

  • Editing the interviews into sections during the documentary instead of having it all in one go

  • cutting pat of the tescos shot as it is too long and doesn't add to the documentary

  • getting rid of some of the credits at the end as they are not necessary

  • cutting the opening of the documentary during the archive footage but keep the section when the deal is made, including shaking hands

  • add still shots and other archive photos from newspapers, Internet articles pictures, using transitions

competition advertising permission

when researching other magazine articles about Levi Roots amir had spotted a competition being advertised, which it quite common in magazines. We immediatly contacted Natasha, Levi Roots PR Agent and she was very happy to let us use the competition ad in our magazine article.

We had both thought that this competition ad would make the article look more professional and we both very excited to put it in our two page spread.

The advertisment is a competition giving the public a chance to win Levi's Reggae Reggae bus as well as many other substitue prizes. All you have o do is purchase a promotional jar of Reggae Reggae Sauce, Reggae Reggae Tomato Ketchup or Fiery Guava dipping sauce, then log on to www.reggaereggaebus.co.uk and enter your code into the field requested along with your name, address and contact details.

magazine article

To the right is our first attempt of the first page for our double page magazine article.our first obvious thought was to use the colours red, yellow and green as use it as our backround so that we can include the Reggae Reggae sauce backround and then like every other magazine article have the interview text going down the page in colums, with a title at the top and pictures inserted throughout the text. After we analysed this article Amir and i both though that it was so predictiable and boring that we could easily do somehting better in order to make it stand out. So we completely scrapped this idea and started from the beginging.

Because our article is Levi roots from rags to riches, we both thought that it would be best suited if we used our advertising poster including the bottle with the money tree to be the main focus point of the page. Instead of using the predictible colours on the backround we had thought a simple white backround would stand out best. Using microsoft publisher we inserted the picture of the money tree bottle into the middle of the page and worked around it. we had displayed pull quote questions in those colours around the artile and created a title whihc was bold but simple. below is a copy of our final article:

final supporting piece

we had come up with our last concept of Levi Roots and how he has literally come from rags to riches, we wanted to gather that concept and put it in a poster, but stilll keep it simple. We wanted to use the bottle again as well as the label that we had created for our second supporting piece, which we also used in our third supporting piece, and simple have the bottle in the middle of the page on a white backround, almost like our second supporting piece, but with an edited photo of a money tree arising from the top of the bottle. Amir had found a photo of a money tree on the internet and we both sat down together and used photoshop in order to edit it and place in on top of the bottle, so it looks like the bottle is branching out into money. There were a few parts on the tree where you could see branches whihc we wanted to get rid of. In order to do so we simply used the bled tool on photoshop and covered over the branchs and blended the notes of money over them so that they were not visible anymore.

third supporting piece

For our third supporting piece Amir and I had come up with the concept of Levi's Products in a row with one of the bottles edited to advertise the documentary. During our media lesson on a Wednesday we both travelled to Tescos to buy
one of Levi's products the reggae reggae sauce bottle and took it back to school to edit it. We had created a label on Microsoft publisher using his signature colours and text and printed the label which we then cropped to fit the bottle, we simply sellotaped the label to the bottle at the sides so that the sellotape was hidden when taking photos. During our first trip to Tescos we
had spoken to Darren who is head of security about permission to take photos down one of the aisle at Brooklands Tescos, he had agreed to let us take photos of some of the products. We visited Tescos later that day to take photos, we brought our edited bottle along with us and simply place it in with the rest of his products, we took over 60 photos to give us a wide range of choice, we had selected four of the photos that we preferred most and and played about with the editing. Below is our first edit of the chosen four photos

second supporting piece feedback

Amir and myself went a spoke to a few of our media class mates and showed them are second supporting piece in replacement to the other and asked for some of their feedback and whether they though it was an improvement to the previous. some of the points they like were:

  • The way the label looked exactly like a normal bottle of reggae reggae sauce but the text was replaced with the advertising text

  • Clear photo taken with a SLR camera

  • The white back round makes the bottle stand out and the text seem clearer.

as you can see from our feedback the second attempt supporting piece was much preferred to the previous one therefore making it an easy decision for Amir and myself to select this as one of our final supporting pieces.

second supporting piece changes

After looking over our second supporting piece with the bottle and the grey back round, Amir and myself decided that this advertising poster did not stand out as well as we had hoped and thought that we had many other ideas that would be better for our supporting pieces. we had spoken to our fellow media students as well as our teacher and they also agreed that the second supporting piece was not suitable this was because of the following reasons

  • The image was too dark which made the text harder to read as well as making the image look rather boring.

  • The text did not wrap round the bottle completely making it look unprofessional
After making this decision, we both sat down and had discussed during one of our lessons other ideas that we could use to replace the second poster, and had thought about using the same kind of concept with the bottle and replacing the food description with the documentary description using a label which we will create but including a shadow of the bottle to the right as well as more information by the side of the bottle so that the label is not to crowded making it harder to read. we simple created the label using Microsoft publisher and had removed the text already on the label with the text that we wanted to advertise the documentary then used a blending tool in order to bled in the back round colour. then we simply printed the label out cut round the edges and sellotaped it to the bottle carefully so you could not see the sellotape.

second supporting piece

For our second poster Amir and i had taken a simple levi roots reggae sauce bottle and edited the text on the front to advertise our documentary. we had taken a photo of a reggae sauce bottle and used Adobe Photoshop to edit the back round and remove the original back round. we then edited the the text on the front to advertise our documentary simple by adding a text box. in the first image you can see us using the rubber tool to remove all of the back round so that it is just the bottle. In the second image we added a grey back round and changed it to fade to black in the corners to add the effect of the back round blurring so that you focus on the bottle. The last image is our final draft of our second supporting piece.

supporting pieces

Amir and i have started to create our supporting pieces. We have decided to do a double page spread magazine article of an interview with Levi Roots as well as an advertising campaign for our documentary. We have started to create both sections of our supporting pieces starting with our posters for our advertising campaign. We have created a few examples so we were able to play around with different ideas.

Our first idea is to create a poster simply with three colours red, green and yellow as our back round going horizontally across the page. A silhouette of Levi Roots will be on the left hand side of the page. The title of the documentary will be in the middle of the page as well as the showing time and channel in black font. below is a draft copy.

The back round colours and the image of this poster were extracted from his book the reggae reggae cook book, which we then altered to form our first advertising poster. We edited the poster so the writing was in series orbit black large font, which was the closer font that we could find to the font used on his products and website.

Documentary-first edit

Here is our first edit of our documentary Amir and i have created we have a Small amount of changes we need to make before it is completed and will be making those changes later this week.

Practise

To edit our documentary Amir and i are using video pad editor as we find it alot easier and are both able to access this programme at home. Here are some videos amir and i had created using video pad video editor so we were able to get to grips with all of the tools the programme has to offer before amir and i edit our final documentary.
